The Andrews Raiders were a group of Union soldiers during the American Civil War who conducted a daring raid behind Confederate lines in 1862. Led by civilian scout James J. Andrews, 22 volunteers commandeered a locomotive called “The General” and attempted to disrupt the vital railway line between Atlanta, Georgia, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. The raid ultimately failed, and several of the Raiders, including Andrews, were captured and executed. However, the bravery of the Raiders was later recognized, and several members, including William Pittenger, were among the first recipients of the Medal of Honor.
