Volunteer

The Heritage Center offers a variety of opportunities for volunteer service. These opportunities can be classified into the following 3 areas:

Education

These volunteer opportunities include all aspects of education and interpretation both on-site and beyond the walls of the Center. The volunteer assignments include the following:

Gallery Assistant: This position engages the visiting public in the permanent and changing galleries, answering questions, providing directions and supplemental information, and providing passive security for the locations to which they are assigned. While the primary purpose is to assist the public at large in a self-guided exhibit setting, they may, on occasion, provide a guided tour to adult groups that specifically request such a service.

Education Assistant: This position assists with scheduled educational programs for school students in the galleries and classrooms. Such programs will typically consist of several distinct activities, one of which will be a targeted tour of one or more galleries.

Character Development Program Instructor: This position teaches units of the Character Development Program at schools, Youth and Family Development Centers, and other student-focused venues.

Outreach Program Instructor: This position teaches a specific Medal of Honor story using items in a traveling trunk at schools, Youth and Family Development Centers, and other student-focused venues.

Living History Presenter: This position represents a historical character, whether an early Medal of Honor recipient or an “eyewitness” of the heroic actions of a recipient, making history “come alive” through use of the clothing and equipment, mannerisms and language, and detailed first-hand knowledge of the historic period and event. Such engagement will typically occur in the galleries but may involve a more extended program located elsewhere.

Events

These volunteer opportunities include all aspects of event execution, whether rental or institutionally sponsored events. The volunteer assignments include the following:

Event Assistant: This position involves the development, set-up, and break down for institutional special events and programs, as well as select rental events.

Event Host: This position performs hospitality and visitor services functions for institutional special events and programs, as well as select rental events. The duties include welcoming and registration, coat check, serving of refreshments, and assisting with other visitor needs or issues.

Administrative Support

These volunteer opportunities involve a variety of functions directly related to administrative or “back-of-the-house” activities. The volunteer assignments include the following:

Collection Assistant: This position assists with the registration, cataloging, identification, inventory, and basic care of the Center’s artifact collections.

Exhibit Assistant: This position assists with the development, installation, and disassembly of temporary exhibits, as well as the cleaning and periodic rotation of artifacts in the permanent gallery.

Tradesman: This position aids in one or more of the construction or maintenance trades including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and cleaning.

Clerical Assistant: This position assists with office support duties including membership and donor records, typing and filing, mass mailing, and receptionist duties.

Volunteers may choose to serve in any area that interests them and in which a vacancy exists. It is possible for volunteers to serve in more than one area as long as such dual service does not result in scheduling conflicts. In other words, there will be many ways volunteers can help to make the Center, the city’s premier stop for visitors.
