The Battle of Lookout Mountain, also known as the Battle Above the Clouds, was fought on November 24, 1863, as part of the Chattanooga Campaign during the American Civil War. Union forces under the command of Major General Joseph Hooker attacked Lookout Mountain and defeated Confederate forces commanded by Major General Carter L. Stevenson. The battle drove into the Confederate left flank and allowed General Hooker’s men to assist in the Battle of Missionary Ridge the following day, which routed General Bragg’s Confederate Army and lifted the siege of Union forces in Chattanooga – opening the gateway into the Deep South and, eventually, bringing an end to the Civil War.
