The Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center is honored to bring the Battle of Mogadishu to life through a powerful, fully immersive theater experience that combines dramatic storytelling, environmental sound, lighting, recreated architectural elements and projection technology to place visitors inside the defining moments of the Battle of Mogadishu.
At the heart of the experience will be the defining moment Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randall “Randy” Shughart chose to enter the Super 64 crash site, challenging visitors to consider: What compels someone to knowingly risk everything for another person? Through their story and those of the American soldiers who fought beside them, the exhibit will reveal that VALOR is more than recognition for service in combat—it is the extraordinary choice to protect others, fulfill a duty and place service above self when it mattered most.
The Battle of Mogadishu was marked by extraordinary acts of bravery and gallantry of Gordon, Shughart and many other American soldiers who fought beside them. As visitors enter the exhibit, they will understand the two Medals of Honor, 58 Silver Stars, two Distinguished Flying Crosses and other decorations awarded on that day represent more than recognition of valor in combat. They represent extraordinary choices made in moments of danger—to protect others, fulfill a duty and place service above self when others need them most.
