America 250 | The Spirit of Service Teacher Workshop

  • June 5, 2026

Overview

As part of our nation’s America 250 celebration, the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center and WTCI-PBS are collaborating to host a Teacher Workshop to explore “the spirit of service” from the American Revolution to present-day with educators. This Teacher Workshop will include a viewing of digital classroom resources, panel discussion, gallery tour, and a lesson plan deep dive. The panel discussion will include Medal of Honor Recipient Dwight Birdwell—one of only five Cherokee Medal of Honor Recipients.

A member of the Cherokee Nation, MOH Recipient Birdwell’s life and career reflect a sustained spirit of service—from serving in the military to advancing justice as an attorney. Learn more about MOH Recipient Birdwell’s actions in Vietnam, his journey to the Supreme Court of the Cherokee Nation, and how the six core values embodied by the Medal of Honor can serve to guide our nation’s next 250 years.

WTCI-PBS Digital Resources Highlighted

These digital classroom resources illuminate the American Revolution through Cherokee perspectives. Students will explore complex themes of independence, land rights, and cultural convergence in the Tennessee River Valley. By integrating local expertise and historical thinking skills, we aim to provide a nuanced understanding of this pivotal period, challenging traditional narratives and fostering deeper student engagement.
