J. Burt Sawyer

joseph sawyer hixson tn photos1On July 29, 2020, Lieutenant Colonel J. Burt Sawyer, U.S. Army (Ret.), passed peacefully, surrounded by his family and loved ones.  Mr. Sawyer, in both military and throughout his civilian life, embodied the values of Patriotism, Citizenship, Courage, Integrity, Sacrifice and Commitment.

What better way to honor his legacy than to provide students from his alma matter, Notre Dame High School,  with opportunities to learn the importance of these six character traits and how these values can be used in their daily lives.

With the blessing of Mrs. Sawyer and through your generous gifts, the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center will create the J. Burt Sawyer Legacy Fund to help provide field trips to the Heritage Center for Notre Dame students at no cost.  By bringing these students to the Heritage Center, they will learn the meaning of the Medal of Honor and be immersed in the incredible stories of Medal of Honor recipients. Thanks to legacy fund, current and future Notre Dame students will be inspired to act selflessly and make a positive impact in their school and in our community.

“The Medal is worn to share a message that there’s a different way to live your life — it’s caring for others more than yourself.”

– Gary Beikirch, Medal of Honor recipient
