The Greater Chattanooga community is cordially invited to join the Charles H Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center and Unity Group of Chattanooga as we will commemorate the Juneteenth national holiday, which will take place on Sunday June 19, 2022 from 10-3PM.

Juneteenth marks the occasion when Gen. Gordon Granger issued Gen. Order No. 3, which informed the people of Texas, “that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” This occurred more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. In recognition of this, there will be a special admission price of 8.65 which also symbolically marks the ending of the Civil War in 1865. It is also important to note that the first Father’s Day occurred on June 19th, 1910.

Like all esteemed veterans that served during one of our nation’s greatest struggles, the United States Colored Troops played an important and pivotal role in helping to usher in a new birth of freedom. Eighteen members of the USCT and 8 African American sailors were awarded the Medal of Honor. Many of these veterans would continue to serve in the 9th and 10th calvary and 24th and 25th infantry regiments, and be commonly referred to as Buffalo soldiers.

Throughout the day we will be providing special guided tours of our Buffalo Soldiers exhibit which features George Jordan who won the Medal of Honor for gallantry in the U. S. Western theater. Again, we welcome all to help us remember and reflect on this very important chapter of our nation’s history.
