Maury Nicely is a native Chattanoogan. He graduated from The McCallie School, and then Vanderbilt University, and then went on to receive his law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law.

Nicely practices in the area of labor and employment law, spending 12 years in the L&E department at Miller & Martin before becoming Labor Counsel at the Chattanooga Volkswagen facility. In 2010, Nicely co-founded the firm of Evans Harrison Hackett, where he continues to practice L&E and litigation law.  Nicely primarily represents employers on issues of workplace discrimination, wage-and-hour claims, labor law, and the preparation of employee policies and handbooks (and lately, all things COVID-19).  His clients range from small local non-profits and start-ups to large national corporations.

In 2002, Nicely wrote the Chattanooga Walking Tour & Historic Guide and, in 2011, the East Tennessee Walking Tour & Historic Guide. His newest book, Hoffa in Tennessee, about the 1964 Chattanooga trial of Jimmy Hoffa, was released in April 2019.

Nicely has served on the boards of the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center, The Bright School, Friends of the Festival, Chattanooga Arts & Education Council, Trust for Public Land, Cornerstones, Inc., the McCallie Alumni Council, and the Vanderbilt University Alumni Association.

His wife, Jennifer, is president of the Memorial Hospital Foundation. They have two sons.
